Introduction
BARLABEL is a program on the cutting edge of the U.S. Postal Requirements
for the '90s. BARLABEL will use various file formats such as, dBaseIII+,
SDF (Standard Data File) and Comma Delimited Text files. If your file is
compatible with these formats, BARLABEL will print your labels with either
or both the Carrier Route and Barcoded Zipcodes. This can save you signi-
ficantly on mailing costs provided you meet the US Postal Services minimum
requirements on pieces to be mailed, etc. BARLABEL is being released as
shareware and a registered copy can be purchased for the low price of
$39.00.
The format explained in this documantation was authorized by the U. S.
POSTAL SERVICE as of June 17, 1991, as a means of printing BARCODES,
CARRIER ROUTES, and the NEW ZIP + 4 on a standard 3 1/2 x 15/16 mail-
ing label. It is therefore, very important that you understand exactly
how and why we arrived at this format. In the past 10 years that I have
either created or purchased mailing lists, well over 95% have been a 3
line label, NAME, ADDRESS, CITY, ST, AND ZIP. However this program will
up to 2 more lines, including the line for the CARRIER ROUTE and the
BARCODE. (Sometimes there may not be a CARRIER ROUTE in the address.)
To help businesses, mailing list managers, get the most from this new
program and help the Postal Service to do a better job of handling the
mail with their automatic sorting machines, including their new BAR-
CODE readers, will "update" your mailing lists on a "free of charge"
basis, by correcting any miss-spellings, corrections of street, ave-
nues, boulevards, parkways, places, ways, etc., checking also direct-
ions, office numbering, apartment listings, standardize every thing
possible, checking for city spellings, use proper st abreviations,
adding missing zip codes, adding the NEW ZIP + 4, and adding CARRIER
ROUTES if there is one for that particular address, and return to you.
The Postal Service will accept 5.25 (360/1.2 mb) and 3.5 (720/1.4 mb)
The Postal Service requires the you send 2 disks, one with you data,
the other a formatted, but blank disk. Suggest you add your label for
proper identity, and your return address.
While these instructions relate to those with an MS-DOS system, the
Postal Service will perform the same for owners of APPLE and MACINTOSH
but I'm not qualified give further advice. Check with the Postal Ser-
vice. Now's the time to get a MS-DOS computer.
While this program is just about the simplet program you have ever used
considering what it does, we MUST stress the "file structure" as being
one of the most important part of the program both for the operation of
this program, and satisfying the needs of the Postal Service in making
additions and/or changes to your mailing list.
In order to process your data file at the Postal Service, it MUST be in
a STANDARD DATA FILE (SDF) format. If you are using dBASE 3+, the comm-
and is:USE FILENAME. THEN TYPE 'COPY FILENAME.EXT TO FILENAME.EXT SDF.
(Keep the file structure, when you get back your updated mailing list
from the Postal Service, you can append it back to your original file.
To import the SDF file back into your dBASE file, the command is:USE
FILENAME, APPEND FROM FILENAME.EXT SDF return. Without the SDF dBASE
will tell you it is not a dBASE FILE.
THIS IS A SDF FILE (NOT SCALE) and is only way POSTAL SERVICE WILL
ACCEPT. Though BARLABEL will accept data from this format, we recom-
mand your returning to a dBASE format first, as this is not a very
stable format for any type of data.
The Postal Service will also ask where each field starts and the next
begins.

Though this program was originally designed for a dBASE3+ application,
by making BARLABEL a stand alone program, allowing comma delimited, and
standard data files, the potential use is far greater than we ever
thought possible. However, our file structure MUST be adhered to or the
program will not operate properly.
The field names, types and widths must be as follows:
NOTE: IT IS NOT NECESSARY
NAME CHARACTER WIDTH
---------------------------------------- FILL EACH FIELD.
NAME CHARACTER 33
ADD CHARACTER 33
CITY CHARACTER 33 IT IS NECESSARY TO USE
ST CHARACTER 2
ZIP CHARACTER 9 FIELD NAMES.
CR CHARACTER 4
NO SPACES IN FIELDS
THIS FILE STRUCTURE DOES ALLOW MAXIMUM USE FROM A 3 1/2 X 15/16 MAILING
LABEL
BARLABEL will be in a state of evolution for sometime as we learn more
about the users requirements and enhance BARLABEL to meet these require-
ments. Your constructive comments and suggestions are welcome. At least
two free upgrades will be made available to registered users as new
releases are developed.
INSTALLATION
Installation of BARLABEL involves nothing more than copying the files
into a directory of your choice on your hard disk. In order to execute
BARLABEL from anywhere on your hard disk, the directory you choose will
have to be in your PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
OPERATION
BARLABEL is simple to operate, however there are certain requirements
to efficient operation. As an overview, you must first select the
SETUP menu and choose your printer type and file format. Once completed,
you will move over to FILES where you tell BARLABEL what file to use.
You can either type in the filename or you can select from a directory
of files. After the file is selected, your next step is to move over
to PRINT where you can choose ALIGN for printing an alignment pattern
for aligning the labels. Once the alignment is complete, print the
labels. Thats all there is to it!
P.S.
We thank you for selecting the BARLABEL program for producing your
mailing labels.
Please feel "FREE" to copy the program and past on to your freinds,
business associates in the "SHAREWARE CONCEPT."
As far as we know, we have the 'only' barcode program directed strictly
for use in mass mailing, bulk mailing, junk mailings geared to the
Postal Service's automated barcode readers, and barcode sorters.
Should you need further information, please feel to call anytime between
8:AM and 10:PM (AZ TIME). We are out of the office from time to time,
but feel free to leave your name and number "after" the beep on the
answering machine. We will then return your call on collect call basis.
THANK YOU
WILLIAM VINTER
